My Brother Charlie by Peete, H. R., Peete, R. E., and Illustrated by Evans, S. W.
My Brother Charlie is a children’s picture book that seeks to address one of the challenges facing both parents and children in today’s society. The book, as highlighted in the title, is authored by Holly Robinson Peete and Ryan Elizabeth Peete. The illustrator, Shane W. Evans, further provides clear and effective illustrations in teaching or rather introducing children to autism and its effects on individuals. The March 1st publication by Scholastic Press in the year 2010 addresses one of the most sensitive issues in today’s society. The authors present their personal experiences from dealing with a child and a sibling who is autistic in their non-fictional introduction and presentation of autism. The non-fictional book is recommended for children in Grades 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The preschoolers Grade 3, for instance, stand to benefit from both the illustrations and information presented by the book as it unfolds. As a review and personal reflection feature book, My Brother Charlie makes for an excellent choice among the books with positive influence among children in Grade 3.
Re-tell of the Story
My Brother Charlie is a first-person narration of the authors’ experience with an autistic child and brother, Charlie. The narrator begins by introducing the audience to the fact that she is the twin sister of an autistic brother Charlie. They share a very strong bond stemming from their mother’s womb. The author further highlights the things that they have in common and their differences regarding how they behave towards each other and those close to them. Even though they both “love hot chocolate with marshmallows”, Callie is quick to recognize the fact that they are also different in unique ways. It is based on such differences that Callie prepares the audience for the main theme of the story, autism and the challenges it poses to affected children, parents, and society as a whole. The author then goes on to highlight the differences in development between Charlie and Callie, which portrays the former as being abled differently.
