Summary of the Chapter
This chapter focuses mainly on the music in FDR America. It is evident that at this time, the United States of America was part of the Allied forces, which formed sides during World War II. These developments created new political styles and debates. Hence, significant themes emerge in the chapter, such as addressing or understanding the role of music in the community and the role of composers during that time. Without a doubt, music played a significant role in FDR America. As music and the composers were part of the change during World War II, America was still trying to escape the Great Depression. These saw changes in the music industry, such as the technological advances that improved radio music. Hence, with World War II and the Great Depression, music found growth and improvement opportunities.
Technology played a significant role in improving music during the FDR time in America. There were improvements in radio music, such as sound being added to motion pictures and the invention of microphones, which changed classical music and recording. Electronic recording was also evident at this point. The advantage is that music broadcasting became easy to move from coast to coast (Ross, 2013). All these were new modes of mass communication but allowed for information movement quickly to all targeted audiences. The United States of America President Franklin Roosevelt saw the advancements and greatly supported the New Deal project. In this support, music was supported as Roosevelt provided a benevolent budget that would help in assisting music growth and art development.
President Roosevelt, in the New Deal Project, had a music-based aspect of the Federal Arts Project. The advantage of the project is it propelled the composers to improve their influential works, especially on matters affecting America at that time. Music programs for the initial time got $ 7 million, and the amount was distributed to the available musicians, who were 16000 and a total of 125 orchestras (Ross, 2013). The challenge is that when the taxpayer’s money is released to support art, which receives and controls, it creates a debate. Politicians attempted to influence the funds, and it caused obstacles in music, but there were advances and improvements evident as the outcome. Musicians and composers focused on their main agenda and propelling the music to all targeted audiences.
