Book Report for the Battle for America
The political environment during 2008 U.S presidential elections were marked by various issues. Amongst the key issues were the Iraq war, change against experience, economy and race. However, before the economic crisis, Iraq war was the main issue of discussion. There were individuals who supporting the war, while others like Obama were opposing the war. From the beginning, Obama oppose the war, and this gave him competitive advantage over other Democrat competitors. Another common theme in 2008 U.S presidential campaign was change vs. experience. In the democrat camp, Hilary Clinton was position herself as being experienced, while Obama stood on the theme of change, he marketed himself as an individual who has the ability to bring Change in the U.S. this theme of change vs. experienced continued even after Democrat nominations, as McCain started branding himself as an experienced individual. Amongst the voters, economy was a priority as since the great depression, American economy had never suffered such a crisis as experienced in 2008. As an effect, every candidate was stating strategies on how he could revive the American economy. In addition, 2008 U.S presidential campaigns were characterized by media biasness, as most of the coverage indicated that news agencies were favoring Obama (Balz, Haynes, & Hill 2012, 56).
Having the ability to wing news agencies` support was the greatest strength Obama had. In 2008, President Obama had full support from media. A large percentage of news agencies in the United State especially media was behind Obama. Though this media coddled democrat candidate in other election years, but in 2008, it gave all required respect to the democrats apart from giving its candidate a wide coverage. In its reverence to president Obama, news agencies were inversely proportional to its contentiousness on Senator McCain. This is based on the fact that there was nothing antagonistic was said towards Obama, but lots of them were directed towards Senator McCain.
In 2008, it was clear that President Obama benefited a lot from his smart speeches. He knew that he had a gift of ensuring that smart and established people to feel virtuous in helping him. This is rooted on the fact that he is a good listener, very attentive and empathetic. All this made his mind very powerful in a manner that he has the ability of disjoined screeds into consensus reasoning. During his speech, he could win many voters based on the fact that his attentiveness and empathy had made him aware of the problems Americans were facing in their day-to-day lives.
