The book ‘’Bury my heart at Wounded Knee’’ shows the history of the Native Indians during the time of arrival of White settlers. Specifically, it shows how the Natives resisted the invasion by refusing to sign treaties which were intended to move them from their ancestral lands. Therefore, the work responds to the given class questions regarding the book readings.
Brown’s account of Red Cloud’s War
During the period, the commissions were engaged in a peace negotiation to sign treaties with the government, which could then be used as legislation. However, the authority to present the final treaty which was to be used in making the legislation was given to Red Cloud who was a chief in Sioux land at the time. Nevertheless, Red Cloud realized that signing the treaty was harmful to his community while benefiting the government, which was controlled by the colonial nations. As a result, he decided to lead the Guerilla War, which was later joined by other tribes making the group stronger. The war was targeted at killing the White people, despite the heavy casualties that they also incurred. This is supported by the author’s statement that ‘’ Roman Nose of the Crooked Lances was their leader, and he rode with Red Cloud, Dull Knife, and Old-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses. Almost three thousand warriors formed the war party. Among them were the Bent brothers, painted and dressed for battle’’ (Brown 113). In response, the Whites retaliated by killing several Native children and women. Luckily, Red Cloud later agreed to sign the treaty after reaching an agreement with the government.
Comparing and Contrasting Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull
Red Cloud is seen as a warrior who led a strong resistance against the US military. However, he failed later after giving in decided to sign the treaty. The act made his followers conclude that he had gone soft. Moreover, this made him lose several followers who moved in and started other resistance groups led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.
Just as Red Cloud, Sitting Bull was outraged by the aggression and cruelty of the White settlers. As a result, he decided to raid the American soldiers and managed to kill and capture most of them. However, after being defeated, he decided to take an exile to Canada, especially when his people began starving. However, he was later arrested because of his association with the Ghost Dance Movement and scuffle with the police which led to his death after being shot.
Moreover, Crazy Horse was also an influential chief, and he partnered with Sitting Bull in leading a series of Guerilla attack on the US soldiers. The author describes that ‘’ Together with Crazy Horse of the Oglalas; they would make history sixteen years later in 1876’’ (Brown 25) just as Sitting Bull’s followers, the followers of Crazy Horse were also starving, which forced him to surrender to the US army. Unluckily, he was later stabbed and killed after trying to attack a US soldier.
