Guidelines for reading report four
In this reading report, you will summarize and evaluate the argument in the reading assigned for November 7: Frank Dikötter, “Racial Discourse in China: Continuities and Permutations,” in Dikötter, ed. The Construction of Racial Identities in China and Japan (Hawaii, 1997), pp. 12-33.
Here are some questions you should address in your reading report:
What question does Dikötter want to answer in this chapter? How does he answer the question (in other words, what is his thesis)? What evidence does he use to support his thesis? How convincing do you find his argument? What additional research would help scholars discuss this question in more depth than Dikötter does? You can suggest different sources or different approaches to the question or even different interpretations of the sources that Dikötter discusses.
You should cite page numbers for the material you mention from the book in this way (Dikötter, p. xyz). If you cite any other sources, include a bibliography with complete information on author, title, publisher, date.
Your paper should be around 500 words, formatted with double spacing and one-inch margins.
Print out your reading report and bring it to class on November 7. Be ready to report orally that day on your written report.

Dikotter presents the idea of racial crisis through demonstration of different ideologies focusing on race and their inclusion after being subjected to thorough debates and scrutiny by Chinese thinkers. The ideologists’ mission could be expressed as nothing beyond saving Chinese culture and, more specifically, the Chinese race from the inferiority complex. Dikotter achieves this by giving a historical account of Chinese culture alongside displaced Confucian conceptions on the universalism of Chinese culture. However, such an approach tends to separate racial consciousness from the real questions on cultural nationalism (Dikötter 13).
