Guidelines for reading report five
In this reading report, you will analyze a chapter that we will discuss in class on November 14. The chapter is the following:
Jamie Monson, Africa’s Freedom Railway: How a Chinese Development Project Changed Lives and Livelihoods in Tanzania (Indiana University, 2009), chapter three (pp. 35-70).
Write a paper about ONE of the following questions:
1) Based on evidence from Monson’s book, would you say that Chinese involvement in Africa in the 1960s and 1970s was completely different from the European governments’ actions in Africa before then? Why or why not? (To address this question, you need to have some background knowledge on European involvement in Africa.)
2) How significant were the changes that resulted in Tanzania and Zaire from the Chinese involvement in the TAZARA project? Cite evidence to support your argument.
3) What were the major sources of friction in the relationship between the African workers and Chinese workers as they built the railroad? Were they handled effectively? If so, how? If not, why not?
You should cite page numbers for the material you mention from the book in this way (Monson, p. xyz). If you cite any other sources, include a bibliography with complete information on author, title, publisher, date.
Your paper should be around 500 words, formatted with double spacing and one-inch margins.
Print out your reading report and bring it to class on November 14. Be ready to report orally that day on your written report.

Q2: Significance of the TAZARA Project
After liberation in 1960s, Tanzania and Zambia forged a strategic plan to build a transnational railway line connecting the two regions under what came to be Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) project. Despite setting an apparent project outline, the African nations had no sufficient resources to fund the massive project. Consequently, the two countries turned to the Western powers in search of funds. However, the western powers rejected the request citing unsustainability of the project (Monson, 2009 p. 34). World Bank equally disapproved the plan due to its high cost. The rejection by the West of TAZARA project compelled Tanzania and Zaire to seek Chinese assistance. Notably, China agreed to salvage the situation by providing both financial and technical support for the two nations. The Chinese decision to support TAZARA project impacted the region substantially.
The building of this railway project had significant cultural impact on the region. Notably, China had incurred sizeable cultural revolutions before committing to this project. Nonetheless, African builders freely interacted with the Chinese leading to cultural interaction between the Africans and the Asians. For instance, the spread of Swahili language among the Chinese builders and the best part Africa. Evidenced by Mr. Ma Wangen, a Chinese interpreter who could speak Kiswahili among the Chinese builders. Moreover the Chinese enhanced strengthening of socialist principles among African workers as a strategy of fostering worker discipline and unity (Monson, 2009 p. 36). Consequently, spreading their socialist ideologies to Tanzanians resulting to the nation’s Ujamaa principles. Further, the construction also led to movement of many African farmers from the regions of Tanzania to centralized Ujamaa settlements along the railway line. Therefore, the TAZARA project strengthened socialist ideologies in the East African nation.
