Tony Horwitz is an award-winning author famously known for his book called Confederates in the Attic. In his book, he examines his growing interest in the civil war in America. He goes ahead to write on the relationship between the people of America and the war that ended years back. In the book, he writes about several experiences. Some examples of the experiences include visiting a military pack during its anniversary. Having a heart to heart talk with a person by the name Alberta Martin, who was believed to be a surviving widow of a Confederate soldier in addition to visiting a national historic site where the prisoners of war were held among many other experiences. After it was published, Confederates in the Attic were the best seller during the time in the United States. To add on, it was described as humorous since the author was between two different sides not knowing what to choose. The essay explores the experiences undergone by Tony Horwitz in addition to exploring how the issues affect us in real life.
Confederates in the Attic are a record of a road trip taken by Tony Horwitz around the United States in an attempt to find out what the people of America especially the people of South remembered about the civil war. He wanted to show how the preconceived idea of how the civil war happened determined the decisions the people made in their lives. The book was written in an entertaining and informative way. As he journeys along, Tony Horwitz meets several people who amaze him. Some of the people he meets include a civil war historian by the name Shelby Foote with whom he shares a lot about the civil war. He also meets some factory workers who spend all the money and time they have in reliving the experiences they went through as soldiers in the war. They talk about how they spent the chilly nights in the open air while covering themselves with thin blankets and how they would walk for miles in their boots which were in pathetic condition.
