Yoyoma and Friedman on Collaboration
Students Name
Institutional Affiliation
Collaboration plays a substantial role in our lives by effecting a lot of things that would otherwise have led to chaos. Yoyoma Ma, in his book Necessary edges: art empathy and education, argues out that art should be made a part of the education system. The associated elements of empathy help in the creation of balanced thinking necessary for building a good global culture. As well, such culture requires collaboration that can be achieved through the incorporation of art in the educational curriculum. On the other hand, Friedman discusses two theories that help in the prevention of conflicts and their limitations. Therefore, this paper will focus on what Ma says about collaboration, the different kinds of collaboration put forward by Friedman and their positive impacts and the various ways that are not discussed by the authors showing that collaboration is an important aspect in the society.
According to Ma, collaboration is brought about by “Incorporating arts” into the educational curriculum. The human brain has “dual neural pathways” for both empirical and critical thinking (Ma, 2014). Through the deep thinking, the human mind is able to create some level of empathy with the situation at hand hence making it easy for them to cope with that situation. This condition of coping is known as collaboration. As a result, without the arts that trigger empathy, it would be hard for individuals to understand the concept of collaboration. This calls for its necessity in the education system. As well, being able to place yourself in another person's shoes is not an easy task. The person could be undergoing a difficult situation that you could find difficult to cope with. This is whereby collaboration comes in by evoking the feelings of empathy. Thus, through the empathy, an individual is able to fit in another's shoes. Given the direction which the world of leadership is taking, Collaboration would be an important aspect to understand because it would help in the formation of treaties and the prevention of actions that could, in turn, lead to chaos. Ma also argues that collaboration is the key to a peaceful society. It helps in placing the ego expressed by people between the society and an individual. This creates an equilibrium due to the collaboration applied. Therefore, given such equilibrium in the society, it would be difficult to have chaos because the people's ego is balanced with the society's expectations. A new “way of thinking” is possible that brings together art and science (Ma, 2014). As a result, this helps in enhancing the thinking capabilities of human being hence their chances of collaboration. People can only be able to survive with a narrow bandwidth of conditions in the society because the conditions help in bringing the people together. A condition that has a wide range of differences could turn out to be difficult in terms of bringing people together. In such a situation, every person would be concerned about meeting their need without putting any consideration on the impact that their actions would have on the society. Therefore, collaboration is a very valuable aspect in the society because it act...
