GGR124 Cities & Urban Life Assignment #2: Urban Crisis/Urban Futures?  This assignment asks you to read Octavia Butler’s award-winning novel, The Parable of the Sower, and consider what it might teach us about urban crises and urban futures. Details on how to access the book are available on the course website.    Length:  500 words (maximum) for each submission (x3 submissions) Value:  20% (2.1 = 5% | 2.2 = 5% | 2.3 = 10%) Due:  Submit by 10am on Quercus on each of the dates specified below. Follow your TA’s instructions regarding hardcopy submission.    For this assignment, you are required to submit 3 reading responses to your TA. These should be a maximum of 500 words. We realize this is very short, but brevity is part of the challenge! Each response should engage the assigned chapters and provide a direct response to the question below. An excellent response will demonstrate that you have read the assigned chapters and reflected on them, and where possible, that you have drawn connections to themes from the course.                       Tips: • As ever, please be mindful of the difference between opinion and argument (we are interested in arguments, not opinions). The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler offers a grim picture of the state of cities in the United States. It highlights the progression of some serious environmental issues facing the world today. The ecological problems trace back to the industrialization era and negatively affect the earth’s climate getting worse with each new generation (Hansen et al., 1998). Excessive degradation of the natural environment and the worsening ecology of cities in The Parable of the Sower give a powerful warning of the potential disaster that lay ahead if people neglect environmental conservation. Written in 1993, The Parable of the Sower offers a grim picture some of the environmental issues facing the American cities more than two decades later.
One of the issues described in the first chapters is a water shortage. Water is an expensive commodity that must be saved and preserved. Climate change has caused changes in weather patterns with some areas becoming drier and others wetter (Trenberth, 2011). From the insistence of Butler of the neglected state of the environment it can be assumed that water scarcity is due to little or no rainfall; a negative consequence of years of climate change and environmental neglect. “It only rains once every six or seven years” (Butler, 1993, 61) and “water now costs several times as much as gasoline” (Buttler, 1993, 21).
