Scene Analysis of Gogol’s Dead Souls
19th Century Russian Novel literary analysis paper: Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls
- 5 pages in length (not including work cited)
- Content: will address a question about Dead Souls, no specific prompt for papers and come up with your own questions and then address these questions through a well-developed argument, supported by evidence from the text.
- I have an idea myself, but it depends on whether you can expand on it or not. Otherwise, you can come up with your own question (it's better to develop some creative ideas, don't worry if your interpretation doesn't match the author's intention because we never know).
Here is my idea: every time Chichikov travels to the next landlord's estate or even at the opening scene of the novel, Gogol spent time writing the journey and the road. An example: at the start of chapter 3, Chichikov was traveling to Korobochka. There are many turns on the way that Selifan (serfdom) all missed because of his ignorance and immersion in his own babbling. By inserting this detail, it seems the author is not just indicating the road and the way itself but the "Russian way": there is no life that one experience a smooth life but turbulent ones with many ups and downs or turns. In the context, making turns would always be a better choice in order to find the right way, even though there was no sign of any direction, and Selifan knows that too. “...Selifan simply could not remember he has driven past two or three turn-offs. On reflection, and recalling the road somewhat, he gathered that there had been many turn-offs, all of which he had missed.” So we can maybe expand on that protrayal of harsh road conditions with the contemporary Russian Society or the fate of characters or serfdoms.
Several other interesting topics to expand on are: the portrayal of women in Gogol's Novel (korobochka, women on the ball, Governor's daughter, etc.), why gogol constantly speak to audience directly in the novel, by inserting some parallel expositions and seemly random details about the estate, Gogol take audience into the scene and expose them with some surroundings and details the character may not notice. and those expositions and grotesque reflect the characteristics of the owner of the estate.
