Eugene Sledge's book is one of the most devastating accounts of any war at any point in human history. It is unflinchingly honest and incredibly violent. Before the war, he lived in Mobile, Alabama, the deeply religious son of a local dentist. After the war, he became a biology professor. He said that the close study of nature helped him grapple with the memories that plagued him, and the nightmares he suffered nearly nightly for the remainder of his life.
-Make sure you provide a thorough answer the question--a sentence is NOT a thorough answer. 1.5-2 pages, single spaced, is usual for this assignment.
-Cite page numbers in parentheses and use direct quotes to support your answer
-The best responses show that you actually read and engaged with the book rather than surfed the internet.
-Your grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph structure are part of your grade.
-I prefer you use 12 point font, 1" margins.

Sledge’s attitude toward his commanding officer Andy Haldane
The book by Eugene Sledge, With the Old Breed, is a highly disturbing narrative of an account of war. Not only is the text exceedingly violent, but is also bravely honest. This book is undoubtedly the finest literary account with regard to the Pacific war. Sledge was a combat veteran. After Eugene Sledge retired, he remained a largely private individual who hardly ever entered the public arena. He died in March 2001 aged 77 years. One question that is answered in this paper is:
What is the attitude that Sledge took toward his commanding offer, Andy Haldane?
Eugene Sledge had an affirmative and positive attitude toward Andrew (Andy) Haldane – nicknamed Ack Ack during the Pacific war. There are many instances in the text that demonstrate Eugene Sledge really liked Captain Haldane and thought positively about him. Captain Haldane was one of Sledge’s heroes amid the despondency of the charred islands. Some of his other heroes included Lieutenant ‘Hillbilly’ Jones, as well as Sergeants Haney and Baily. Regarding Jones, Sledge noted that Jones had that exceptional capability of being friendly yet familiar with the recruited men. Jones had an exceptional combination of those attributes of compassion, dignity, bravery, straightforwardness, integrity, ability and leadership (Sledge, 2007, p. 12). Sledge pointed out, “the only other officer I knew who was his equal in all these qualities was Captain Haldane” (Sledge, 2007, p. 12).
Sledge pointed out that “Bowdoin College annually honours the memory of Captain Haldane by presenting the Haldane Cup to the graduating senior who has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership and character” (Sledge, 2007, p. 28). Haldane Cup was essentially a gift from officers that had served together with Andy Haldane in the Pacific. Sledge stated that at one point, he talked with Captain Haldane and he wanted to know all about Sledge’s education, home, and family. Sledge noted that Captain Haldane’s “sincere interest in each of us as a human being helped to dispel the feeling that we are just animals training to fight” (Sledge, 2007, p. 28). Moreover, Eugene Sledge wrote that Captain Haldane was highly praised by both subordinates and superiors for his leadership abilities. He “was the finest and most popular officer I ever knew... he had a strong face full of character” (Sledge, 2007, p. 28). This evidently demonstrates that Sledge really admired Haldane.
It is worth mentioning that Andy Haldane insisted on stern discipline. Nonetheless, he “was a quiet man who gave orders without shouting. He had a rare combination of intelligence, courage, self-confidence, and compassion that commanded our respect and admiration” (Sledge, 2007, p. 28). This statement by Sledge shows the outstanding leadership qualities that Haldane possessed which made Sledge to hold Haldane in high opinion and reverence. Eugene Sledge added that “while some officers on Pavuvu thought that it was necessary to strut or order us around to impres...
