Guidelines for reading report two
In this reading report, you will make use of historical evidence from the Ch’oe Pu reading to address one of the following questions:
1) How do the religious beliefs of Ch’oe Pu compare with those of his companions on the boat?
2) Are Ch’oe Pu’s impressions of the character of the Chinese he meets mostly positive or negative? What does he criticize and what does he praise? Why?
3) How does Ch’oe Pu conceive of the relationship between China and Korea? Why are they two separate realms? How are they linked together?
4) Judging from this story, how effective was the Ming government? The Chosŏn government?
Your paper should be around 500 words, formatted with double spacing and one-inch margins.
You should include a bibliography that lists your sources, including the assigned reading (does not count for the 500 words). When citing information, use parentheses with author and page number, as in the example below. Each work you cite should be included in the bibliography.

Ch’oe Pu’s Religious Beliefs and Those of His Companion
Ch’oe Pu’s religious beliefs differed from those of those of his companions in several ways. To begin with, a majority of the crew displayed a fatalistic attitude that negatively affected the morale of those on board. Contrary, Ch’oe Pu’s religious beliefs made him to remain confident that their lives were going to be spared while on the voyage. Ch’oe Pu held that it is possible for the team to make a safe crossing. He seemed to be the only person to have hope that all would be fine. According to Meskill (32), after spending barely four days on the boat, all soldiers had already lost hope as they saw death was inevitable. Rather than repairing the boat, the soldiers resorted to waiting for their death. So terrified were the soldiers that even whipping them could not make them take orders and fix the boat.
On the sixth day while the ocean drifted, Ch’oe Pu watched the violent waves and saw something that turned out to be a whale that was capable of swallowing or overturning the whole boat, according to one of the crew members (Meskill, 35).
