Guidelines for Reading Report Three Writing

Book Report Instructions:

In this reading report, you will make use of historical evidence from Andrade’s Lost Colony to address one or more of the following questions:
1) Did the Dutch have a significant military advantage over their Asian adversaries? Don’t just cite Andrade’s conclusion about this. Give some relevant details from his descriptions of battles and assess the strength of his argument.
2) What similarities are there in the Ming society that Ch’oe Pu describes in his report on his 1480s experiences and in Andrade’s descriptions of the Ming in the 1630s? Discuss an example or two in depth.
3) Are the historical figures Andrade discusses all clearly of one “nationality” or another? Analyze two or three interesting cases.
4) Andrade argues that the Dutch needed Asian allies to be successful in their Asian ventures. What evidence is there in the book to support this argument?
5) How does “religion” play a role in the encounters between the Dutch and Koxinga?
Your paper should be around 500 words, formatted with double spacing, one-inch margins, and a properly formatted bibliography (it can just include the Andrade book, if you don’t refer to any other sources).

On the other side, the Koxinga ships also used their familiarity with the coastline and they would launch surprise attacks. Andrade shows that the ability of the Dutch to move fast played a great role in their defeat of the Asian adversaries. He says that the multiple sails of their ships against the winds gave them an upper as compared to the Chinese ships. In that case, the agility rather than the firepower of the Dutch played a great role in their success.
The historical figures that have been used in the book have been portrayed in different ways in terms of character and origin. Koxinga was the son of Zheng Zhilong and a Japanese woman by the name Tagawa Matsu. In his descriptions, Andrade has used Koxinga as a parable on why the Chinese defeated the Dutch on Taiwan. Koxinga has been presented as creative and adaptive to each of the situations that he was go...
