Guidelines for reading report one
In this reading report, you will compare the accounts of the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty presented in two chapters written by two different historians. The chapters are both posted in the Course Documents section of our UB Learns site. They are:
Jacques Gernet, A History of Chinese Civilization, 2nd edition (Cambridge, 1996), chapter 17, “The Mongol Invasion and Occupation” (pp. 360-384).
Morris Rossabi, Khubilai Khan: His Life and Times (California, 1988), chapter 5, “The Emperor of China” (pp. 115-152).
Write an essay that 1) evaluates in what ways the accounts are different and 2) discusses whether or not the differences are important for our understanding of the history of China. Be sure to explain clearly why you think the differences are important or not and cite evidence from the chapters to justify your argument about the differences. You can focus on one major difference or discuss several. If you like, you can bring in points from additional readings about the Yuan dynasty in your discussion of the chapters. If you do, be sure to include these others sources in your bibliography.
Your paper should be around 500 words, formatted with double spacing and one-inch margins.
You should include a bibliography that lists your sources, including the assigned reading (does not count for the 500 words). When citing information, use parentheses with author and page number, as in the example below. Each work you cite should be included in the bibliography.
Example of in-text citation style:
During the Tang dynasty, Buddhist monasteries played an important role in the economy, setting up pawn shops and lending money to farmers and even members of the imperial court (Benn, 29-32).

Introduction
The Yuan dynasty in Asia and specifically in China is well documented by various historians. However, the accounts presented by Rossabi and Gernet differ in terms of motives and objectives. Gernets gives account of the harsh rules imposed to the Chinese especially due to racial discrimination. However, Rossabi gives account of how Khulibali wished to be perceived as the legitimate ruler of the Mongols and the Empire of China. This essay seeks to evaluate the differences in the accounts, and the importance of these differences to the Chinese history.
