Describe the difference between an etic and emic perspective, as Goode explains them in his article, “Who is Bobby.”
The difference between etic and emic perspectives is in the subjectivity or objectivity with which they consider and comprehend matters. On the one hand, etic perspectives “are external to the situation under analysis, and many etic or analytic models may be brought to bear any situation” (Goode, 198). What etic perspectives reveal are observations from outsider’s perspectives and standing. The results of etic perspectives are simply observations or the results of the values, principles, and culture of a person or people. Emic perspectives, on the other hand, are “discovered from within the situation under study” (198). Unlike etic perspectives, emic perspectives are observations from a subjective point. While they are often from the primary subjects, this does not mean that this is a prerequisite. Emic perspectives can also be from individuals who take up the values, principles, and cultures of the primary subjects. When compared to etic perspectives that Goode notes “produce fault-finding images and identities,” emic perspectives reveal positive evaluations from people close to primary subjects such as “parental testimony” (198).
