Introduction and Why I Chose the Book
I am taking a course that is broadly in the visual and performing arts field. The book I chose for my book review is “Persian pottery in the first global Age: The Sixteenth and seventeenth centuries” by (Golombek, Mason, Proctor, and Reilly (2013). One of the things I have learned in class is ceramics and their application in the arts field. Therefore, I chose this book because it contains the information that I need to advance my knowledge in the field. It gives a succinct study of the ceramic industry and how it was transformed due to external influence. The book gives crucial information on the origin of the ceramic industry and how it was affected by other materials from other countries such as China.
What I Like About the Book
What I like about the book is that it was initially conceived as a crucial focused academic study as well as a guide and handbook that effectively helps in dating and provenance of the corpus of Safavid wares which have been largely misunderstood over the time (Golombek, Mason, Proctor, & Reilly, 2013). The book gives research-based information on such ceramics and changes that have taken place in the ceramic industry over time. The book also contains color photographs embedded on some of its pages, making it intriguing and interesting to read and flip through. Further, the book contains crucial sections which have been specifically devoted to diagnostic shapes, motifs, as well as their potter’s marks and their evolution. There is also a catalog that is well comprehensive on the Safavid pieces that are found in the Royal Ontario Museum, which helps in diagrammatically illustrating the introduction and description made in the text.
