Escalating conflicts and disagreements between the Northern states and Southern states led to the war, which we all know the North won.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="870" height="580" src="https://essayzoo.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/What-If-the-South-Won-the-Civil-War-1.jpg" alt="What might have happened if a Southern victory was proclaimed? It is possible that America would alternatively house the second capital in Richmond, and that the term “Confederate” would be retained in order to honor the victory they had won and to signal the shift into a legitimate federal government.

Obviously, with a Southern win, slavery would continue to exist for a far longer time in the United States, hand-in-hand with the inevitable weakening of the North. This would render America incapable of outshining the British empire and emerging as an industrial giant. It would also be a blow to American economic and military strengths, which means they would not be able to step into World War I in Europe and ultimately change the direction of the war. Eventually, they would not have the same shine to their name that enabled President Woodrow Wilson to introduce the Fourteen Points, which was a key factor in the establishment of the League of Nations.

Second, it seems that with a Southern victory comes the full shift of the United States into a confederate nation. This would entail the states maintaining sovereignty over their territories and connecting to one another through a series of treaties. The South would also probably boast of its victory and prestige due to them winning the war in the years ahead. While this is all bad news for the North, they would have probably carried on with pursuing industrious prosperity. They can do so by choosing to still abolish slavery in their areas of jurisdiction, while the South continues to use African slaves for cheap labor.

Despite two different ways of economic development and the refusal to work together and collaborate, it is possible that all confederate states would still achieve prosperity. As a model for the confederate system, the United States would probably spread the idea of a confederacy globally, which could have potentially fast-tracked the confederation of Europe.

It is also possible that if the Confederation fails to find a peaceful rhythm between the North and the South, tension could start up again which could potentially lead to new wars.

Third, there could be a scenario where the South would independently constitutionalize itself as an independent confederation, creating an economic status that would be similar to that of South America. It is possible that its economy would weaken and start to become dependent on North America. We would see migrations to either side or walls put up to separate the states.

Fourth, a Southern win could mean the evolution of slavery and finding ways to utilize it in industries other than cotton.

Fifth, the South triumphing over the North would herald a hierarchy where slave owners and their families would make up the elite, and African American slaves would be at the bottom of the system. There would be no room to navigate through the hierarchy as you are either a slave owner or a slave. Somewhere in the middle, you might have the group of professionals – the doctors and lawyers, for instance – forming a thin divide between the two.

Finally, and most tragically, a scenario following the South winning would be the gradual collapse of the system. With each state becoming its own independent entity and doing things their own way, a general consensus would be close to impossible to reach. It would keep the United States from rising up to become a superpower.

FAQs

Would slavery still exist if the South won the Civil War?

The answer to this is a resounding “Yes.” Slavery would continue to exist and flourish in the years to come. Some might even say that the South would find more creative and strategic ways to profit from cheap labor, by using slaves in other industries apart from cotton.

Why did Southerners believe they could win the Civil War?

The Southerners carried some false assumptions that led them to believe that victory was within their reach. First, they didn’t think that the conflict would intensify and lead to war. They didn’t think that the North would escalate it to that level. At the same time, they thought that a peaceful consensus could be reached in a short amount of time. They also planned on simply going on the defensive should a war break out. Since they were people who were used to firearms and riding horses, they thought that they would make better soldiers than those who would be fighting for the North.

This is a free essay sample available for all students.
