In understanding the relation between democracy and growth, it is necessary to identify the elements of democracy that are influential in economic development. Johnson models democratization in order to represent the association between democracy and economic development. The role of external pressure in improving democratic transition is identified, where the elite in non democratic societies might try to limit the impact of external pressure on governance. A correlational research on the relationship between economic development and democratization illustrates the likely associations between the two variables. The theoretical framework explored in the article gives a background on previous studies on democracy and economic development, while also giving direction on further research.
There has been controversy on the impact of democracy on economic growth, and this is because empirical estimation is not straight forward. The author highlights on the impact of external pressure towards improving the democratization process. The theoretical approach assumes that in non democratic societies there is a divide between the elite and the common citizenry. Despite ruling with an iron fast, dictators do not always rule without trouble, since the citizens can rise up against the political elite. In other words, the elite may be worse off when there is democracy given that they have less control and power over economic institutions. At times, the elite may result to concessions to minimize citizen unrest or revolt. However, in extreme case, the concessions cannot work as they are temporary and the elite can either democratize or result to more repression.
To further highlight on the applicability of this model is that to the elite, policy concessions are bad, but there are also good for the citizens. Economic development typically results to rising income in the society, with capital playing a more prominent role in the society.
