The Crucible:
What would you do if YOU were in John Proctor's position?
Let's review said position; and please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this:
John Proctor is willing confess to spare his life, because he considers himself a sinner anyway due to his adultery. It's a mentality of, "I'm already at the party, so I might as well have a drink..." so to speak.
He won't confess if it means naming others.
He also won't confess if it means writing his name down for the public to see on the church's door.
If he doesn't at least sign his name, then he will be executed.
John knows he will ultimately be judged by his God, and that writing his name would be a lie. In some way, this might be his last opportunity to redeem his spirit on earth.
So, what would you do, given the circumstances? Would you sign your name and live?
Professor's answer to this one:
This one is easy for me. I would totally sign my name, unless it somehow meant I would be shunned from the rest of the community to an extremely uncomfortable and even deadly extent. I mean, if you're signing that paper, you're essentially telling your neighbors you're a witch, and they're all stupid and weird enough to believe that. That could really screw up your everyday life. But would it screw it up to the point that you wouldn't even want to live anymore?
For me, it's hard to put myself in Proctor's shoes because I definitely don't believe the sort of vengeful and strict Puritanical god that he and his neighbors do. I'm not telling ya'll what I DO believe, just that I don't believe what Proctor and his people believe.
So, ultimately, I would sign the paper unless I was sure that death was preferable to how my life would be after signing the paper.

In this case, I would not want to live an uncomfortable life because people have labeled me as a witch. I would rather die than live a life where I have negative or destructive relations with society. It is the desire of every person to have positive relations with others, and it is their wish to have a happy life. Just because someone is labeled a witch does not mean they are doomed to live a miserable life. It is the wish of every person to live a happy life. This entails how a person relates with others and how people in society view them. A person's happiness in life is a personal thing that is often influenced by external factors (Oltean, Hyland, Vallières & David, 2019). Most people would say that fame, wealth, and ...
