Healthcare for Women Who Are Wheelchair Users
Healthcare access by wheelchair bound women could remain a challenge in the United States. According to a recent article by Stein (2017), it’s apparently clear that the US Senate is not keen on enacting laws that will enhance healthcare accessibility to women. The article entitled “No cuts to Medicaid!” shows protesters who were largely women and disability rights activists demonstrate against the planned amendments to the Healthcare Act. The protesters were determined to ensure that the Trump administration halts its plans aimed at repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Cases of employment discrimination against people with PTSD are still rampant in the US despite the existence of a mitigative legal framework. According to a recent article by Leonard (2017), EEOC sued a freight company for its failure to grant its driver access to his dog meant to offer him emotional and PTSD support. The EEOC case against CRST Inc. stated that the company violated the AmericansDisability Act (ADA). The CRST Inc. case is a classic example of workplace disability discrimination, and how the American Disability Act (ADA) is helping curb this vice. The case shows that employers are yet to make necessary policy adjustments to accommodate people with disability. In denying the driver access to his PTSD support dog, CRST quoted violation of company policies. Thus, employers are legally obligated to incorporate workplace disability amendments in their policies in compliance with the disability law.
According to an article by McMillan (2017), the American healthcare act that is meant to replace Affordable Care Act is likely to hurt women, and in particular, people with pre-existing medical conditions. Dubbed as Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017, the bill risks reversing all the gains made under Affordable Care Act. As a result, women are likely to lose essential healthcare benefits if the bill is enacted. The planned amendments will make the mandatory basic benefits under Affordable Care Act subject to state determination. Medicaid, which covers more women as compared to men is likely to suffer deep cuts, as federal funding is reviewed. In a nutshell, the senate bill if enacted will reverse preventive care gains as fewer women and people in the low income bracket will have insurance. Women, children and people with disability will be the most hurt if the ‘Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017’ is passed into law.
