The article “Self-esteem in Early Adolescence as Predictor of Depressive Symptoms in Late Adolescence and Early Adulthood: The Mediating Role of Motivational and Social Factors” by Masselink, Van Roekel and Oldehinkel is essential for individuals in psychology who want to examine the relationship between self-esteem and depressive symptoms in early adulthood. The aim of this article was to examine and evaluate if the level self-esteem in the early adolescence may aid in predicting depressive signs in both late adolescences and in the early adulthood. Additionally, the authors also explored the factors which are fundamentally associated with self-esteem and the processes of adolescent development.
The data used for this particular research was from Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS) study and it came in four waves which include early adolescence which involved participants between 10 to12 years old. The second wave was middle adolescence which included children between 12 to 15 years old, third wave, late adolescence, comprised of participators aged between 14 years to 18 years. Lastly, the four-wave, early adulthood involved individuals between 21 to 22 years old. The study participants were only included in the study if their schools agreed to participate in the study and when their parents provided informed consent.
It is true and I agree with the research results that self-esteem at early adolescence was remarkably associated with depressive symptoms at late adolescence. However, the authors did not provide clear illustrations of the relationship between self-esteem and the different social factors that are associated with depressive signs. Additionally, the study showed that self-esteem may predict avoidance motivation which clearly anticipated and projected depressive symptoms. As expected the authors managed to show that avoidance motivation may project and predict more social problem and may also show less social contact. The researcher successfully showed that social problems are significantly connected with depressive signs and unpredictably, the also found that there is a positive connection between social contact and depressive indicators.
The authors also concluded that there is a direct connection between social problems and self-esteem. They also found that the direct relationship for social contact and social support with regard to self-esteem was not insignificant. The pervasiveness of depression grows significantly during adolescence and the authors emphasized that it is important to identify the possible factors which may help in predicting the growth of depressive symptoms. It has been proved that self-esteem and depressive symptoms are high liked and related especially among adolescents.
