Summary of Research Article
Shaikh et al. (2019) examined the population and rate of infestation of chewing lice on Common quail situated in two urban and two rural areas of Jamshoro and Hyderabad Districts, Sindh, Pakistan. The one-year study revealed high infestation of chewing lice among birds in rural localities.

The summary of the study highlighted the importance of the findings in improving understanding of host-parasite interaction in the study area. I learnt that temperature and humidity are two critical factors that facilitate high infestation by parasites on the host body.
The research was placed in the wider context: the authors provided critical background in relation to previous studies on the parasite. Unfortunately, the summary did not mention the broader implications of the study as it relates to human health. The general public should care about the study because chewing lice have a high capacity to develop host specificity with their hosts, especially birds that cover a major part of the poultry industry. Understanding the host-parasite interaction can help in controlling the parasite among commercial poultry and prevent production loses. Given that the study managed to focus on eukaryotic parasites while also contributing new knowledge in a relevant and meaningful way, the overall score is 8 out of 10 for relevance.
