Article Instructions:

The model diagram in the attached picture is also a must!!!

Instructions for Short Paper

Find a news article, published since September 1, 2019, that you can model using the economic models we have studied in class to date. Excellent sources for articles include The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and The Economist.

Cut out or print the news article and attach it to your paper.

Write a three-page paper (double-spaced, single-sided, 12 point font, one-inch margins all around), changing the language of the journalist to the more specific language of economic models. Explain exactly what the journalist is saying in terms of economic models, and determine whether the journalist’s conclusions are consistent with what the economic models imply. Include fully labeled graphs whenever possible. The graphs can be included in a separate appendix (in addition to the required number of typed pages of text), but be sure to refer to the graphs and describe what they show in the text of your paper. I will not pay attention to graphs that are not described in the main body of your paper. The appendix with the graphs should contain no text. You may either hand-draw the graphs or generate them with a computer. If you choose to hand-draw them, please be very neat, use a ruler, and pay careful attention to your handwriting.

Do not

  • Choose an article which simply reports facts
  • Choose an article on a topic we have not covered
  • Simply summarize the article
  • Include graphs which you do not discuss in the text

The paper should follow standard writing format. Include a title, an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, a body supporting the thesis statement, and a concluding paragraph.

The grade for the paper will be determined by:

  1. Does your choice of article permit analysis with models we have studied to date?
  2. Is the article rich enough to allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of economics, or is the article very simple with only a single (or a few) idea(s)?
  3. Do the economic models you use to describe the journalist’s ideas correctly illustrate the verbal arguments by the journalist?
  4. Does your paper show understanding of the economic models you use?
  5. Is your paper well-written? Does it have an introduction with a thesis statement, a body supporting the thesis statement, and a conclusion?

Papers are due at the beginning of class (before I begin the lecture) on their due date. Papers turned in between the beginning of the class in which they are due and the beginning of the next class will be penalized one letter grade. Papers turned in two classes late, will be penalized two letter grades, and the pattern continues.

The news article examines the resultant implications following swings within the market rates such as decrease in the international interest rate. In this article, the trade talks between the United States and China have registered a stagnation period which has eventually led to stock market volatility alongside consternation across businesses that deal with higher pricing during importation as well as export of goods. The concern focuses on the Trump administration’s towards Chinese economic practices that includes infringement on American intellectual property.
In this article, the production and the consumption point are presented as the same. The decrease in world interest rate due to the America Chinese stalemate have the implication that the opportunity cost of various investment is on the decline. This means that the various projects with lower returns are guaranteed profitability. In this case, the production point moves from S to S’ in the upper panel on which makes the investment to expand along the investment schedule within the lower panel, acting as a good representation within a closed economy that represents one-period Macro Model. The fall in interest rates shows the existence of relatively low demand. The new supply point given by P1 as the intersection point between new demand and supply. The expansion of the demand and investment implies existence of a deficit in the stock market.
In this case, the Cournot economic model is used in describing the nature of industry structure where there is competition between rivals on the amount of output produced, which in this case is decided independently of each other and at the same time. For example, some of the American demand on tariffs were considered by the Chinese government as infringing on their sovereignty. On the other hand, the Chinese government shortlisted chosen American products that would exempt from their established new tariffs. Some of the exports exempted from heavy tariffs include cancer drugs as well as certain chemicals not manufactured in China. However, these was not inclusive of American exports such as pork and soybeans which is seen as Beijing punishment for American tariffs on their goods.
The article reveals that the impact of the change in productivity by use of the savings as well as investment schedules. The productiveness of capital ensures investment shift upwards, on the demand, the fact that future stock prices is expected to be high, the consumption rates increases in the current market. This causes rein...
