The article "Translating and implementing a mindfulness-based youth suicide prevention intervention in a Native American community" is published by the Journal of Child and Family Studies in 2015 (Le &Gobert, 2015). The article targets youth suicide prevention, focusing on vulnerable youths in Native American communities where few suicide intervention programs are adopted to meet their needs. Additionally, the article is beneficial to researchers on psychotherapy intervention and suicide prevention in minority communities and the communities where culturally appropriate interventions are incorporated in suicide prevention. Mindfulness research has increasingly focused on minority populations and how best to incorporate mental health interventions that are most likely effective.
Native participant engagement was crucial to enhance the effectiveness of mindfulness and youth suicide prevention among Montana's native communities. The tribal leaders were informed of the research. The researchers worked together with the schools to facilitate the intervention, which was associated with support for the intervention and willingness to participate in the intervention. Input from the community helped to adapt and incorporate the mindfulness intervention in a Native American school (Le &Gobert, 2015). Mindfulness was incorporated in the social service programs, and respect for traditional healing practices improved acceptance of the intervention as there was mutual trust.
