Understanding the importance of personal rest concerning organizational performance is essential for any manager. It allows him to strategically improve efficiency while taking into consideration his employees’ and their families’ well-being. In this article, the author would both focus on determining the effects of extended maternity- and paternity leave in the lives of their children as well as its resultant impact on the company. Initially, this would include a discussion about Chai, Nandi, and Heymann’s (2018) article about the effects of extended maternity leave to their children. Subsequently, the author would then utilize the article written by Bainbridge and Broady (2017) to show that these extended leaves could improve the organization. All in all, the author believes that having an extended maternity leave (more than eight weeks) is essential to give sufficient time for the children’s well-being and improve the company’s efficiency.
Effects on Children
One of the essential effects of extended maternity leave is those relating to the children’s welfare and development. In the article written by Chai, Nandi, and Heymann (2018), the authors have conducted a study wherein they utilized longitudinal data from 992,419 live births from 1996 to 2014 in multiple countries. The research methodology compared the differences between the time of breastfeeding and its duration concerning the paid maternity leave policies of the states. Accordingly, a regression analysis of the data shows that even a 1-month increase in the original 14-week system increased both the breastfeeding duration and early duration of breastfeeding by 5.9% and 7.4%, respectively.
