This article by Mike Ives narrates a failed meeting between China and Vietnam. The meeting was meant to 'mend fences' and foster the relatively peaceful relationship between the two nations, especially after a hostile past between them. It is speculated that the failed meeting came as a result of several issues. First is the resources at their territorial borders, such as rocks, islands, offshore islands, and gas blocks in the South China Sea. Each country laid claim to these territorial resources. The second reason is Vietnam's efforts to promote its strategic cooperation with the US and Japan, whom China views as their geopolitical and economic rivals. Another reason was Vietnam's apparent refusal to abandon oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea, contrary to China's expectations to be the exclusive economic controller of the Zone off Vietnam's East (Ives, 2017).
