America’s Biggest Economic Challenge
The United States of America is regarded as the global economic superpower. Similar to other economies in the world, the USA has been battling several economic challenges. In the article America’s Biggest Challenge May Be Demographic Decline, Neil Irwin indicates that demographic decline among working-age residents is the primary cause of the economic decline in America Cities. He further suggests that setting up attractive economic programs to attract immigrants would salvage the situation (Irwin). The declining population growth in America working age is likely to cause an annual drop in economic expansion from 3% to 2%. Based on the trend, approximately two-thirds of states in America will have a low number of adults within the working-age bracket (Irwin). The author claims that population change does not affect every state equally because young people are migrating from small cities in rural areas to bustling urban centers on the coasts. Further, he suggests that to counter the projected decline in workers, American families should give birth to many children and improve social facilities in cites to attract young families. Additionally, immigrant policy to encourage skilled immigrants should be drafted to raise the population in those cities (Irwin).
According to the trend in the recent statistics, the general American population is expected to decline as well as the working age. Therefore, the measures to increase the population should be put in place to ensure that demography of the working age, which mainly consist of people between the age of 18 years and 54 years rises. Irwin also suggests that increasing social amenities is one way of attracting young families to settle in rural cities. The argument may not be valid because the majority of the smaller cities present more favorable conditions due to low living costs as compared to the big cities. People living in small cities enjoy affordable houses with big yards and low crime.
