Effects of Climate Change
Human activities led to the change in atmospheric conditions, weather, and now climate. The use of biofuels, environmental degradation, improper forest reductions, human settlement, industrialization, and other activities are significant contributors to these changes. Mountain snows are melting, ocean levels rising, and rainfall patterns changing. Gillis, a New York Times author, lists the effects of climate change affecting the environment their consequences on human lives (2014). This essay examines the contents of the article and discusses the impact of climate change, which are rising sea levels, dwindling climatic patterns, and food insecurity from low agricultural yields.
According to Gillis (2014), one of the effects of climate change is rising ocean levels. The greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere destroyed the ozone layer that absorbed the heat waves from the sun. The result is more intense heating of the earth’s surface. This washes down the ice from mountains through melting, flowing through rivers and into the oceans. The existing icebergs in most oceans also melt. Without the oceans releasing this water to some other areas, and with the slow evapotranspiration rates, the rising water exceeds that leaving the oceans’ surfaces. This increases the levels by some inches annually. This rising ocean level will eventually encroach and reclaim ocean shorelines, and threaten to displace the people staying along with these areas.
