Are Prisons Obsolete?
Angela Y. Davis book Are Prisons Obsolete encourages the readers and the society at large to think about the criminal justice system. Prisons are perceived as something that the society cannot do without, leading to dismissal of prison abolitionists as utopians who are unrealistic (Davis 16). Angela adds that the prison system today can be compared to slavery of blacks and Jim Crow laws that the white society believed could not be abolished. The book allows the reader to consider the fact that prisons are not as efficient as one would assume. The current criminal system is marred with controversies regarding mass incarceration of African Americans and other minorities. The problem could be attributed to the long-persisting assumption that black people are always criminals.
