Sex Differences in Human mate Preferences
This is an article critique of the article "Sex-Differences in Human Mate Preferences: Evolutionary Hypothesis Tested in 37 Cultures" which is authored by Buss, David and published in "Behavioral and Brain Sciences Journal" in 1989.
The study was conducted to provide clues in human reproductive history specifically on the characteristics that people value in potential mates. The research was intended to offer practically obtained evidences to support the five predicted hypotheses about sex difference in human mate preferences based on evolutionary conceptions. The research carried tested some evolutionary hypotheses to find out on the factors that humans consider when choosing a mate. Hypotheses tested centered on the evolutionary predicted sex differences in human mate preferences based on earning capacity, youth, attractiveness, industriousness and chastity. For example: Men value mates with higher reproductive capacities and men value physical attractiveness in potential mates than women do.
The research showed that females valued good financial prospect in a potential mate more than men did. Also, the results on age difference were in line with the earlier predictions as it revealed that males prefer mates who are younger. In addition, the results also showed that women on average were younger than their husbands. The cross-cultural data strongly supported that males valued physical attractiveness in potential mates. Chastity showed greater cross-cultural variability than any other variable tested in the study. The results yield insight into human reproductive history it`s the most robust psychological sex difference ever documented that provide hypotheses about current sexual selection (Buss, 1989, 10).
The research posed question on whether do the behaviour of arctic terns providing food for females provide similar cues in humans or does it provide a cue to improved status, protection or ‘good genes`. Methodological flaws I noticed...
