From the research, Perceived Racism and Mental Health Among Black American Adults: A Meta-Analytic Review, it is mildly conclusive that racism in all its aspects, affects mental and physical health and not just in the black American population, but also in the Asian and Australian population though to what extent was not been established.
There are a number of variables key to establishing ways sourced and it is quite commendable that the research takes into account two or more psychiatric effects which are then averaged to one general effect.
Similar studies have used two criteria in determining the adverse effects of racial discrimination; one is frequency of racist incidents another is to delve into the psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, paranoia and somatization that may be of consequence of such encounters. This study takes into consideration these aspects, allows the practical sense aside to be seen aside from theory prevalent in most studies. Also, the fact that long term affects on the quality of life and increase in generic life stress are seen, the consideration of publication biases and accountability of different sample environments is a huge score for this paper.
The research has various hoop-holes though and fails to answer some critical questions...
