Correlational Analysis in an Article

Article Critique Instructions:

1. Please make sure to reading the text book (Mark R. Leary) Chapter 9 and 7.
2. The paper that used for critique are attached.
3. PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY AI GENERATOR, SUCH AS ChatGPT, DO NOT USE IT PLEASE.
4. Two sources are required: Leary and Moffitt. No other sources needed.
5. The main instructions for paper is attached.

You will write a brief (200-500 word) essay critiquing the Moffitt et al. (2011) article posted here. This article examines the long-term relation between self-control in childhood and measures of adult functioning. I want you to carefully read the article and provide a critique that evaluates whether the article convincingly attends to issues of omitted variables bias. In other words, identify how the authors interpret these predictive associations and describe whether or not their empirical approach convinces you of this interpretation. As with our exam questions, it is OK to agree or disagree with the approach in the article, but you must justify your opinion using concepts from class.

Some more specific guidance:

1. You should use 12 point font; Times New Roman

2. Your response should be between 250 (lower limit) and 500 (upper limit) words

3. Carefully read the research article and pay attention to the following issues:

-      Theory

-      Hypotheses

-      Key Measures

-      Modeling approach

-      Interpretation

4. Describe the predictive (i.e., correlational) analyses presented in the article. What relations are observed and how do the authors interpret these relations?

5. Do you see any evidence that the authors are making causal inferences with the predictive relations shown in the results?

6. How do they address potential sources of confounding bias? Are you convinced by their approaches to this problem?

-      If so, why did you find their approach convincing?

-      If not, what else could they have done with their data to be more convincing?

-      What other confounding variables aren’t considered? For any confounder suggested, explain WHY it is a potential source of confounding.

Correlational Critique Paper
Moffit et al.’s (2011) article incorporates predictive analyses because it established a relationship between childhood self-control and adult outcomes. According to Leary (2017), correlational research is employed to delineate the association between two or more variables. The authors interpret this relationship by incorporating the odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) in their explanations. In interpreting the relationship between self-control and adolescent mistakes, the authors indicated that youngsters with deteriorated self-control started smoking habits by age fifteen (OR =1.69, 95% CI), dropped out of school without attaining any educational qualifications (OR=2.28, CI:1.91-2.72), and became parents in their teenage years (OR=1.79, 95% CI). This implied that the deteriorated self-control contributed to more snares (Moffit et al., 2011). In addition, the authors made causal inferences with the predictive relations by employing the correlation coefficient, as suggested by Leary (2017), to establish the degree to which the independent (childhood self-control) and dependent (adult outcomes) variables are associated with each other in a linear framework. The article also visually represents the relationship
