Chapter 7
The chapter presents various aspects essential to the understanding of the use of performance management for organizational success. The primary idea in this context is the role played by the performance management system in the development of human capital whereby in this case two ways were identified. First is the provision of benchmark for managers and direct report regarding performance issues and secondly, it helps the direct statement in understanding the strength and weaknesses about the higher level jobs that one aspires to perform(Berger& Berger, 2018).
Given that performance management system plays a critical role in human capital development, it is essential that managers should consider the evaluation mechanism of their direct reports based on key performance criteria of the next level of the desired job (Berger& Berger, 2018). The setting up of developmental activities for each employee focusing on future job improvement of performance will go a long way towards enhancing the growth of an employee's career.
The performance management system links individual performance with organizational performance in that both group and individual performances are a function of strategy, which drives personal performance criteria and the organizational performance, which is a function of the business plan (Berger& Berger, 2018). In this case, the individual performance level provides the essential support required for attaining organizational goals and thus the context within which individual performance takes place is a critical issue.
Therefore, a good performance system is one that allows the organizational managers to assess the employee's performance leading to the acquisition of the desired human capital needed by the company.
