Traditional farming refers to farming that is in absence of electricity, tractors and combines, pesticides, fossil fuels and commercial seed stock and has sustained much of the human species for decades (Desai & Pujari, 2007). Life near margin means that even the slightest transformations in regards to food supply can go a long way in enhancing changes in survival, health, ability to raise families as well as productive capabilities.
Population scientist Thomas Robert Malthus believed that the size of a given population together with its tendency to grow or decline was greatly determined by its food supply (Desai & Pujari, 2007).
