Polymorphic Y Chromosomies Harbor
The essay is an article critique-Polymorphic Y chromosome Harbor Cryptic Variation with Manifold Functional Consequences written by Lemos Et al (2008). It is worth noting that the research or study was conducted to bring to light a mechanism for adaptive phenotypic variation linked with the Y chromosomes. Additionally, it wanted to show the polymorphic phenotypic effect of Y chromosome on sex ratio, temperature sensitivity, fitness as well as behavior (Lemos Et al. 2008). Finally, it was meant to a certain the differences in genetic diversity between Drosophila species, more importantly, the study aimed at addressing the contradiction in manifold phenotypic consequences of Y-linked polymorphism that encompasses sex ratio, male fitness, heat adaptation and behavior.
Among the hypotheses tested in this study include whether Y chromosome may harbor variation that is apparent at only one temperature, that polymorphic regulatory variation as a result of Y chromosome might be expected to affect traits in males, Y-linked regulatory polymorphisms may help to explain some diversity in gene expression patterns seen within and between the species of Drosophila and that variation in sensitivity to temperature may be partly due to regulatory variation exerted by the Y chromosome (Lemos Et al. 2008).
The study found out that Y-chromosome polymorphism is manifested functionally as significant differences in the expression of autosomal and X-linked genes from Y chromosome to the next. Similarly, polymorphic Y-linked regulatory variation seems to be manifold, evolutionarily dynamic, sex biased towards males and influenced by variation in temperature (Lemos Et al. 2008).
The results shades more light to all biologists especially those in the field of genetics. The question raised by the paper are that polymorphisms in the content of heterochromatic blocks harboring transposable elements as well as other rep...
