Craniofacial development in marsupial mammals is a review which was directed to outlining the difference between marsupials and eutherian mammals. Marsupial model explains the different process and patterns in cranial development. These differences are discussed at various levels of development .i.e. cellular and organogenic levels. This research reviews the shifts of genes that are important in regulation of growth and development between the two mammals. Shifts during the organogenic period show the timing of the central nervous system within the marsupial structure, especially on the forebrain. In marsupials these shifts are delayed, compared to the structures of oral facial apparatus. The research also shows that neural crest is more accelerated in the development of marsupials. Neural crest is responsible for the provision of cellular materials for facial skeleton and patterning genes (Kathleen, 1181).
The review therefore form a base whereby biologist can create a case study for further researches on the evolutional changes caused by shifts in the development of marsupials at specific levels of their growth. Comparison between marsupial and eutherian gives us a model mechanism through which we can test various hypotheses on how various development events relate. By using comparison mode, this brings out the hypothesis of causality.ie it clearly shows how one event leads to the development of the next event.
