Effectiveness and the Unintended Effects on the Policy to Reduce Smoking
Introduction
Smoke-free homes protects children from tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). Laws have been enacted to protect non-smokers in most countries around the world. The banning of smoking in public places reduces tobacco intake substantially. The act of cutting down on the habit comes with two scenarios in which there could be the desired effectiveness or undesired effects. This paper critically analyses the both the effects that the policy has on the targeted health problem and those undesired effects on the policy itself.
According to statistics, tobacco is responsible for 3 million deaths yearly across the world (who.int, 2001). Having a policy on the reduction of the smoking habit, will have a positive impact on the health of both the smokers and the non - smokers. The positive effectiveness of the policy will have many people responding positively to avert the predicted death rate that is estimated to hit a 10.9% by the year 2030 (who.int, 2001). However, other benefits related to this practice will include controlled blood pressure to manageable levels, normalization of the oxygen levels, improved breath, reduction of colds and cough, increased stamina, quality sex in the case of men, reduction of lung cancer disease, reduced chances of getting a stroke and reduced risk of contracting a heart disease.
Studies have indicated that a reduction in smoking tobacco products, will reduce the chance of non-smokers getting exposed to second-hand smoke (SHS) especially in restaurants, workplaces, and in public places, which is equally lethal (who.int, 2018).
