The article Savant Syndrome: Realities, Myths, and Misconceptions written by Darold Treffert discusses the various misconstructions that are related with savant syndrome and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) among many. The first misconception that Treffert clears up is that not all individuals with savant syndrome are autistic and so not all autistic people have savant syndrome. In reality, only one out of ten autistic individuals have savant syndrome and so other savants have other developmental disabilities or mental retardation other than autism (Treffert, 2013). The article points out that despite the mystery of what causes savant syndrome, the myth that savants are not creative is false. According to the article, despite the fact that most savants replicate material such as music with mastery skill, evidence has shown that savants with a mean Intelligent Quotient (IQ) of 59 go beyond copying to creating entirely new pieces (Treffert, 2013).
