Article Critique Instructions:

Research and select two professional journal articles that directly relate to team building or improving team performances. A critical assessment of the articles is expected for this assignment. Keep in mind, the Research Database found in the CSU Online Library is a great source for quick exploration of thousands of articles. The articles should be current (less than three years old).
In preparation, follow the guidelines established below:
-Find two articles that pertain to team building or improving team performance
and annotate (in your own words) as you read.
-Note the author's main points and thesis statements.
-Write a critique encompassing both articles into one document.
-Reference both articles in APA format.
-The entire document should be typed according to APA style (double-spaced).
-The Article Critique should be approximately two to three pages in length.
-All journal articles selected should be at least four pages in length.
-The Article Critique is due at the completion of Unit VIII
PART I: Introduction
Start your critique with sentences giving the following information:
-Author's name
-Book/Article title and source
-Author's thesis statement
PART II: Summary
-Summarize the author's purpose and main points/evidence cited
that are used for back up.

PART III: Review and Evaluate
To critically review the piece, ask the following questions:

Thesis statement: goal orientation influences the workers performance in a culturarly diverse environment.
The authors compared the results of two studies to understand how goal orientation affected the workers perception and its influence on team performance. The study was conducted in the Netherlands, where teams from a business class worked together for three weeks. The evidence collected was related to the results of the simulation exercise highlighting the logical argument for the need to take into account information elaboration as an important mediator of diversity and performance. Given that the participants were provided with the same assignments, then assessing the team performance was based on the simulation results.
Despite the study setting being in the Netherlands, the study results are useful to understand how different factors influence people’s perceptions about work diversity while working in teams. The simulation results highlighted on the benefits of setting achievement for a team that is culturally diverse. However, the results showed that when the learning approach of the members is high then cultural diversity is likely to improve performance. By highlighting on the goal orientation to reflect goal preferences, the authors captured information on performance avoidance orientation to reflect how members were willing to undertake tasks or avoid them for fear of looking incompetent.
In order to improve team performance there is a need to understand how cultural diversity has any effect. The authors’ elaboration on the role of goal orientation towards improving performance and the results of replicate studies cannot really be relied upon for generalizing findings. At the same time, there is concern that cultural diversity has different impact on the work organizations, while corporate culture might even be more enduring. The study was largely theoretical and despite using simulation and there is need for more robust studies to understand how goal orientation can help to improve goal performance.
