“Predictors of Abusive Supervision: Supervisor Perceptions of Deep-Level Dissimilarity, Relationship Conflict, and Subordinate Performance," by Bennett Tepper, Sherry Moss, and Michelle Duffy Name Instructor’s name Course number Date About thirteen per cent of people working in the US suffer abusive supervision and hostility from employees and their superiors at work and this includes behavior such as embarrassment in the public and volatile outbursts. The abuse results in problems such as aggression towards the abusive supervisor, problem drinking and psychological disturbance on the abused worker (Tepper, Moss, & Duffy, 2011).The authors make reference to three research publications on why supervisors abuse their subordinates. The findings indicate that they do so as a response to the abuse that they underwent previously in the hands of a similarly abusive employer or supervisor (Tepper, Moss, & Duffy, 2011). According to the authors, the subordinates who are interpersonally incompatible with their supervisors get lower evaluations on their performance and for this reason they consider themselves targets of abusive supervision. This analysis model also indicates that when supervisors rate a subordinate as a poor performer, the relationship conflict becomes much stronger. “The indirect effect of perceived deep-level dissimilarity through relationship conflict is stronger when supervisors perceive subordinates to be poorer performers” (Tepper, Moss, & Duffy, 2011, p. 281). The authors suggest that supervisors tend to form more quality relationships with subordinates who they recognize to be more like them and the likelihood for supervisor-subordinate conflict is lower in such instances. When a negative interpersonal relationship is in play, the supervisor places the subordinates above the scope of justice.
