In this age of information library workers and in this case librarians are important. They provide vital services for schools, universities, and the community at large. However, within this apparently important profession, the salaries are extremely compared to the services they provide (AL, 2002). The author here highlights that there are librarians that are unionized, for example, those in waterlog and those that are not unionized, for example, in cedar falls. The questions of inquiry here are whether can play a role in solving their low salary problem and whether their practices inhibit or promote the libraries plight (AL, 2002).
As an advocate and avid supporter of unionization, I strongly believe that unionization is beneficial not only to librarians, but also the libraries themselves. This is due to the, first, the main goals of unions. These include monetary and non-monetary factors and the aspects relating to managerial control (Applegate, 2009). In regards to monetary factors, unions play a vital role in regards to providing academic freedom collective bargaining, handling grievances, economic well-being, and general development of institutions (Applegate, 2009). Therefore, unions ensure that the economic well-being of librarians is looked and negotiates for salaries for the librarians. For example, Bremmer reports that since they had collective bargaining through the union their salaries have been increasing by between 12% - 15% every three years (AL, 2002).
Moreover, as highlighted above, unions ensure the economic well being of union members. Unions apart from collective bargaining ensure that librarians have favourable salaries and benefits. For example, in 2012, unionized librarians earned 32% more compared to non-unio...
