Annotated Bibliography: Improving an Argument Essay

Annotated Bibliography Instructions:

A bibliography is a list of sources one has used for researching a topic; sources include books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc. The bibliography is sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using.
An annotated bibliography includes a brief explanation (usually about 150 words) on each of the sources, including a summary of the evidence the source provides for your argument. (A bibliography usually includes only bibliographic information; an annotation is a note of explanation or comment. An annotated bibliography is a biblography with explanations and comments.) An example of an annotated bibliography is at https://owl(dot)english(dot)purdue(dot)edu/owl/resource/614/03/ (Links to an external site.)
Your assignment is to create an annotated bibliography of the sources that you have used or will use in the "Module 4 Post A: Improving your Argument" assignment. Your bibliography should meet the following requirements.
It should include three to six sources that inform your argument; at least two of these sources should be peer-reviewed. At least one of your sources should present a contrasting point of view that does not support your argument. The information on the ASU Library covered in Module 3 will help you find these sources, especially the "Article Databases" tab of the EGR 104 Library guide. (Links to an external site.)
Use the IEEE citation style (Links to an external site.) to document each source.
Your annotations should:
Be written in your own words (you cannot copy and paste the abstract or parts of it),
Include a summary of the main topics covered and the main arguments presented,
Include a discussion on how the resource is relevant to your topic and how it has or will inform the approach or solution.
You may use the following table template to capture your annotated bibliography; copy and paste as needed. Remember to format the citation in IEEE format.
The Essay
The music industry has evolved through time, marking significant improvements and developments. Napster is a good example that describes the ups and downs the music industry has gone through because of technological advancement. It popularized digital access to music, killing the traditional technology of using CDs sold to customers and generating revenue. Initially, the music industry made a great profit at the end of 1999 of $14 billion compared to 1958 of $604 million (David, 2016). The shift to digital tunes caused by Napster’s growth cost the music industry a considerable sum in revenue. However, it was a positive development for people as they could access music globally without spending resources.
The world enjoyed streaming music for free courtesy of Napster until 2003 when Steve Jobs and Apple developed a way to commercialize music online through iTunes. They linked hardware like shuffle and iPod that enabled people to access their favourite music wherever they are (Arditi, 2018). People no longer needed to burn their favourite playlists on a disc. They easily accessed it through iTunes, which became successful because they took advantage of the digital era and commercialized it. On the other hand, Napster Record Label could not adopt a distinct method to protect the songs' copyrights, which failed to generate revenue for the company (Kıranoğlu, 2016).

In this article, Arditi describes the digitization and monetization of music on digital platforms. He concentrates on the role Apple played in the digital migration of the music industry. Apple developed two interesting online platforms to commercialize music. The first one was iTunes, where people purchased their favourite music, while the second one is the Beat Music developed in 2014. It is an improvement of iTunes with a slight difference. Beats Music involves music streaming where people do not need to purchase the music, but instead, they subscribe and enjoy unlimited music as long as the subscription stands.
This article is suitable for my essay because it highlights the developments that Napster Record Label's blunder caused. It led to the commercialization of music that helped create revenue for the artists and the streaming companies besides protecting copyrights.
