Hypocrisy between People and in Society
Hypocrisy between people is an issue that has negatively affected society, making people lose trust and belief amongst themselves. Hypocrites are disliked by most individuals since they often use condemnation to unfairly attain reputational benefits at the expense of the individuals they are condemning. Hypocrites appear virtuous, but since most of their actions are based on pretense, their reputational benefits are usually undeserved. Currently, hypocrisy is widespread since most people tend to say one thing and do exactly the opposite. Hypocrisy occurs when one decides to criticize certain actions, yet end up doing the same actions.
Ferrarello, Susi. Are We All Hypocrites. Apr 30, 2016 [Online][Accessed June 6, 2019]
Summary
In an article titled "Are We All Hypocrites," Susi Ferrarello tries to examine if all individuals have become hypocrites. Hypocrisy occurs when different individuals or groups of people fail to present information in a truthful manner, and this is done to fulfill their own motives. According to the authors, "hypocrite" was a technical term that was used to mean stage actors, while "hypocrisy" was and is still used today to as a tool for rhetoricians, actors, and debaters. Hypocrites wear masks so that they can manage to survive in an intersubjective world (Ferrarello). In contemporary literature, the term hypocrisy is regarded as a paradox where showing sincerity depends on the capacity of an individual to be two-faced. Therefore, hypocrisy is simply an act of a person who pretends to do something he cannot. The author argues that the term hypocrisy started to have a negative interpretation in the fourth century BC after it was associated with politics. During this period, Demosthenes was a great orator, and he decided to ridicule Aeschines who was his rival but had managed to become a successful politician and actor.
Analysis
In essence, Ferrarello's article tries to examine the attributes that make an individual to be hypocrite. She begins by explaining that that term hypocrites used to refer to stage actors in the past. From this perspective, it can be argued that hypocrisy mostly occurs when an individual tries to act in a certain way in order to present a different personality. Therefore, hypocrisy in the past was used as a means of entertaining people and not to con or lie to people. Actors simply had to choose the rights words and tone in order to portray his fantasies (Ferrarello). It is evident that hypocrisy can occur even when the actions of an individual are intended at bringing positive results. For instance, when one assumes a certain character when acting, the aim may be to entertain the audience by bringing joy and laughter. Nevertheless, hypocrisy has often been associated with negative outcomes.
Ferrarello argues hypocrisy acquired a negative perception when it is mixed with certain professions such as politics. It is evident that a politician who fails to fulfill his promises is regarded as a hypocrite. On most occasions, politicians are elected in order to fulfill a number of objectives based on the manifestoes they provide to the electorate. However, ther...
