In her article, Kaplan details how stereotypes based on race influence the performance of students. Some of these are mild and people tend to ignore them while others help to shape narratives that are used to describe an entire race or group. In Kaplan’s article dated August 28, 2015, an example of a girl named Ophelia is used. Ophelia knew she was not a gifted student and she was somehow comfortable with the Cs that she amassed. However, in spite of failing to qualify for Advanced Placement classes, she found herself in AP when she joined high school.
