This article is written by Butler for the news website The Guardian. It talks about the reality of people who are in poverty despite trying their best to make ends meet. Mainly, Butler discussed the current welfare system in wealthy countries. Despite having a lot of public and private institutions supporting the projects of the welfare systems, he said that these kinds of support are not viable in the long-term. Instead, in order to lessen the number of people that are living in poverty, he suggested that it is the ‘workplaces’ that should be changed.
On the one hand, minimum wages should be increased in a way that is reflective of the actual cost of living within the country. On the other hand, he also suggested that work hours must be at the right length to keep the workers’ well-being in good condition. A quality that would also benefit the whole organization itself.
In line with the study that I am going to make, this could help in understanding about the state of minimum wages, relative to the cost of living, between wealthy and impoverished parts of the world. The numbers provided in the article could also help in writing the study.
