Film Analysis
Apply the following quote to the character of Louis (played by Brad Pitt.) and Claudia (played by Kirsten Dunst).
“The vampire may present an image of the human, but their power comes from the fact that they are not human. They are by classification outsiders, if not outlaws and fugitives, so the story of the vampire protagonist is typically a story of the struggle to find an elusive freedom, self -acceptance, and community” (Day, 35).
Question 1:
Unlike his maker, he respected human beings enough to want to spare them. For example, in one instance he tells his maker “forgive me if I have a lingering respect for life” (26.20). While still trying to persuade him to join him in his killing spree, his maker answered: “you’ll soon run out of chickens, Louis.” Louis wanted to belong and to be seen as part of the human fraternity. He longed for something different, and at one point he says that guilt was eating him inside and he only desired “one second’s peace.”
Louis also saw himself as an outsider and always seemed to remind his friend. For example, he once told him “we belong in Hell.” Even though he was already dead, he knew the value of life and wanted to preserve it. Louis also acknowledged that he found it hard to fit in. He had desired death so that he could be reunited with his wife and infant, but having chosen vampirism, he was now living with the consequences of his decision.
Louis also found it hard to accept who he had become. He struggled with his new self, but his friend always tried to convince him. At one instance, he says to him “you are in love with your mortal nature. You resist what can bring you peace.” This helps to cement the fact that Louis had not yet made up his mind on who he wanted to be or whether he wanted to adopt an immortal nature like his friend Lestat. Lestat continues to tell him that “we are predators, whose all-seeing eyes give them detachment!” Lestat had already accepted who he was, but Louis never found peace and the fact that he had to take a human life to survive also made it harder on him. Louis’s incessant struggle also seemed to anger Lestat who once told him that “for do not doubt you are a killer, Louis.” Self-acceptance was indeed something that made Louis’s vampire life difficult. He even admitted to Armand that he was at odds with everything. Armand told him exactly who he was when he said that he was “a vampire with a human soul. An immortal with a mortal’s passion.”
Question 2:
Like Louis, Claudia also began to question the point of being immortal. At first, she was okay with being a young girl who could have what she wanted whenever she wanted it. However, she soon realized that it was not enough to live like that and that she had to find meaning in life. For example, at one instance she asks Louis the question he had always dreaded why? Louis made it clear to her that she will indeed never experience old age but Claudia adds something that makes the audience identify and empathize with her. She says “and it means something else too, doesn’t it?” However, Louis never had an answer. As a vampire, what she desired was not possible, and therefore, she was forced to live as she was and accept who she was. At one point, Claudia refers to the life of the other vampires as dull and lifeless which helps to showcase the fact that she was tired of leaving without a cause.
Claudia also live...
