Research Paper
Engineers are a significant component of the workforce. Nearly every sector in the world economy needs an engineer. Today, the demand for engineers in the job market has increased, and many students are developing an interest in engineering courses. Accordingly, retention engineering programs continue to focus on many researchers (Painter, Snyder, and Ralston, 1). One possible antecedent to the retentions is the reasons behind pursuing an engineering course. Yoon(69) noted that students pursue different majors for various reasons.
Painter, Snyder, and Ralston (1) identified six contributing factors to this decision: - information search, job characteristics, matches with interests, financial considerations, major attributes, and psycho-social benefits. However, Yoon (69) attributed this decision to future job opportunities, excelling in math/science, interest in building, and family influence. Lichtenstein (277) had a different opinion. He asserted that exposing students to various engineering activities and jobs could develop their interest in engineering careers.
Sovansophal and Shimizu(69) viewed that student’s belief in enjoying science and practical courses, attitude towards science, parental occupation, sibling and relative major, High school science and mathematics teachers, and tracking/streaming system are the fundamental factors affecting student’s choice of engineering major in higher education. Overall, these studies have demonstrated that a person’s decision to major in engineering depends on various factors.
