Zott, Christoph, Raphael Amit, and Lorenzo Massa. "The business model: recent developments and future research." Journal of Management 37.4 (2011): 1019-1042.
The authors use multiple subject lenses to examine the concept of business model. According to the authors, many scholars in the field do not agree on the definition of a business model, and as a result, many kinds of literature have been developed to explain the concept. However, the authors have managed to identify the common themes about a good business model. The first issue is that a good model applies to an analysis unit of business operation. Secondly, a model should outline the system level or an approach of doing business. Finally, a business model conceptualizes the proposed nature of the company. The themes act as facilitators to an integrated study of a business model.
Rappa, Michael A. "The utility business model and the future of computing services." IBM systems journal 43.1 (2004): 32-42.
Rappa reasons that the utility of business models is usually shaped using some business features, which are typically within the public services. The first characteristic is that users must consider the service as a necessity and hence have a continually rising demand for the service. Secondly, there is the high reliability of the service. Next, the ability to use the capacity is restricted by the utility of the service. Finally, the service or products are at most times scalable. They benefit from the large economies of scale like management, finance, and human resources among others.
