In this article, Hughes and Short (2011) discuss prison and street youth gangs as well as societal responses to them. The authors review various trends in street youth gangs and measures aimed at controlling them and then compare them to new efforts of controlling organized crime. They particularly focus on civil gang injunctions, a common civil remedy for street criminal gangs, as well as the unique problems which they bring for prison gang members returning back to the community.
According to Hughes and Short (2011), various youth gangs such as Latin Kings, Bloods, Crips, MS-13 as well as Gangster Disciples are dangerous groups who are engaged in activities like extortion, assault and different hustles, in addition to various violent and/or illegal pursuits.
