The book is divided into four sections with twenty six chapters. The first section is background and diagnostic assessment, the second section is etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the third treatment and fourth, other care delivery services and perspectives. There are various articles in the edited book, and in the diagnostic assessment here was focus on medical evaluation, cognitive, behavioral. The authors provide background on the evolution of autism from when the disorder was first included in DSM III and DSM-III- R. The various authors indicated that those with ASD exhibit different pathophysiologies making it difficult to focus on targeted treatment that is effective to various groups. The chapters provide an introduction, summary and key points to remember the interfering repetitive behaviors, irritability and hyperactivity were identified as the most common associated symptoms of ASD, but there are a cluster of symptoms considered in diagnosis and treatment. Besides psychotherapy and medication, the book highlights other alternatives that help improve the social functioning and competence of people with ASD including education interventions, improving communication skills and lastly understanding ASD from the perspectives of families and those with the conditions.
